Taking Truth as the Ultimate Authority: Cultivating an Interdisciplinary Scientific Spirit with a Global Perspective
(English Abstract)
Throughout human history, the desire to better understand and potentially control nature has propelled the advances of science and technology. Differing from most disciplines that may be dependent on the viewpoints of individuals and circumstances, the pursuit of science must be built on truth, and truth that shapes the universe and guides its evolution cannot be bent or twisted to yield anyone’s will or agenda. Thus, the spirit of scientific pursuit is the pursuit of truth, and truth is the ultimate authority that remains intact against any subjective challenges.
The practice of scientific spirit requires curiosity, evidence, critical thinking and analysis, objectivity and open-mindedness, honesty and integrity, and courage to follow the truth wherever it leads even when it challenges our own beliefs. Moreover, scientific pursuit is human endeavor without borders, and many major scientific projects (such as those in high-energy physics, astronomy, and space science) have only been realized through international collaborations.
In the current age of explosive development of technology and artificial intelligence as well as major global issues such as climate change and sustainability facing mankind, scientific education and research training must go beyond narrowly defined traditional scientific disciplines to equip next generation scientists with sufficient knowledge breath and interdisciplinary skills to tackle critical challenges and make significant impact. In this talk, I will use quantum science and nanoscience as examples to highlight the impact of these interdisciplinary research fronts on modern civilization, and then will discuss the importance of cultivating global perspectives and upholding truth in future scientific pursuits to benefit mankind.
